The Empire of AthensThe Empire of AthensAs known by all of us, Greece was invaded by the Persians and Turkish, until it finally gained its independence. Since they freed themselves from the enemy, unfortunately internal disputes occured amongst the Greek people themselves. The people of the Sparta felt that their job was done, and they dissociated themselves from the other Greek leagues. It was at this point that Athens started to dominate Greece. As a result of this, the Athens league formed a new body called the Delian League, led by Themistocles as well as Kimon. Other league members contributed to the Athens league, and as it steadily grew, it became so big that it turned into its own empire. Pericles, one of the greatest statesmen of the ancient Greece, laid the foundation of the imperial rule. During his reign, the law in Athens league was very strict. It severely punished those who did not pay tax. Not only was Athens a domineering power during that time, but it started to meddle with the internal affairs of other leagues, as well as place its soldiers in other leagues. As it grew even larger, it finally become the sole controlling power of the Aegean. Since it is a very big league, the Athens league is also very rich, and it was able to finance democratic institutions, literature, art, and architecture. This was known as the golden age of Athens. One, if not the most well known buildings in Greece, The Parthenon, was in fact built during the government of Pericles. It was his government who founded and supported the cost of development of The Parthenon. The greatest Greek playwrights, Aeschylus, Aristophanes, Euripides, and Sophocles, also created their most brilliant works during this golden age. During the golden age, the government of the Athens league made it so that the lower class Athenians able to improve their (financial) status by obtaining land in the state. In addition to that, the government also allowed the citizens to participate in government and sit on juries, and paid them, for taking role. User Comments and Reviews Help our community!
