Greek FoodGreek FoodThe Greek people put special importance food. To them, food have sacred and intellectual meaning. In the old days, the Greeks used to sacrifice a meat to a god before ever eating them. If they happened to hunt and kill animals, they would sacrifice them to their gods since they believed that it was wrong to kill animals. Likewise, the Greeks treated vegatables in the same way. They believed that certain foods were more hygiene than others, and that some gods prefer more food than the others. Most importantly, the Greek people mainly eat Mediterranean dishes, mainly containing wheat, wine, and last but not least, olive oil. They also diligently grow vegetables. Compared to other Mediterranean people (such as the Spanish and Italian), the Greeks eat more fish. Thousands of years ago, as they themselves did not condone sacrificing meats, they also ate less meat compared to others. Compared to other foods from other nationalities, Greek foods are relatively easy to make. Many of the foods are seasonal, and the Greek people tend to make them during different seasons, mainly during the Easter, Christmas, or new year. In addition to the fact that Greek foods are easy to make, they are also known to be healthy. Like the Japanese, the Greeks also have one of the lowest cancer rates in the world, and it has been said that this is due to the fact that they eat high quantity of tomatoes, which are rich of antioxidants. One of the, if not the most famous Greek food would be the souvlaki. Souvlaki (from the Greek word “souvlakia”, which means “made of lamb) is usually served as pieces of seasoned cubed meat. These days, not only do people eat lamb souvlaki, they also commonly eat chicken souvlaki. A perfect compliment to souvlaki is usually the Tzatziki deep. It is basically a yoghurt-based dressing packed with garlic and cucumbers. User Comments and ReviewsPosted by Anonymous on Sat Apr 8 2006 your'e page has helped me a lot.
