Olive oil serves as one of the most commonly used complements for Greek foods. It history dates back thousands of years ago in ancient in Greece. In the past, olive oil was mostly used by Greek athletes, especially those who were competing in the Olympics. If we notice carefully, we could see all the statues of ancient Greek athletes as glowing. This was something that actually happened in the ancient time. Applying olive oil to an athlete’s body was done as a deliberate attempt to create a glow, which symbolized victory. Due to its great importance, Olympics winners nowadays are always crowned the olive crowns.

The use of olive oil began in year 5000 B.C. Originally it spreaded from the Crete island to Syria, and then Palestine and Israel. As Greece colonized more places, the use of olive oil also spreaded to a few other regions such as Southern Italy and Northern Africa, as well as Southern France.

In the ancient Greece, olive oil was important it was regarded as sacred. Very often punishments were given to those who dared to cut it. People gave special treatment to it, such as creating advanced ships for the sole purpose of transporting it to other countries for export.

The Mediterranean cultures specify five conditions which are ideal for the olive tree to grow. They are sun, stone, drought, silence, and solitude. High quality olive oil, most commonly referred to as extra-virgin olive oil, is the most digestible. It is very healthy to consume because it has low organoleptic level, low acidity, and is untreated.

Currently, countries such as Italy and Spain produce the largest amount of olive oil in the world. Italy itself has variety of olive oil producers, each yielding a particular type of olive oil with unique characteristics.User Comments and Reviews
