The Island of Corfu
Every year, hundreds of thousands visitors from all over the world visit the island of Corfu. This island is situated in the northern part of the Ionian island group. This picturesque island is full of mountains and is rich in vegetations since it has many rainfalls during the winter season. In addition, it also has many golden sandy beaches, traditional buildings, beautiful Venetian fortresses, as well as Byzantine churches with impressive architecture.
In Greece, tourism is one of the major contributors to its GDP. Corfu is in fact one of the few islands which opened itself to tourism. The charming capital of Corfu, the Corfu Town (Kerkyra), is the largest town in the Ionian island and is one of the most beautiful towns in Greece. Its buildings have mixed influences from the Italian, French, English, and of course, the Greek culture.
Some places to visit in Corfu:

The Corfu Town: Corfu’s own capital. It is the largest city in the Ionian islands, and its population is 30,000. In this town one can find beautiful palaces, monuments, historical buildings, and beautiful churches. The Town Hall Square, The Ionian Academy, and the Palace of Saint Michael are some of the charming sites that you will be able to visit during your stay in Corfu Town.
- Agios Mathaios: It is a smaller town compared to the Corfu Town, and is located 25 km (15 miles) southwest of Corfu Town. Its population is only 1,500 and it has many stone houses. Due to its location, most of its inhabitants make a living from agriculture.

Gouvia - Dassia: Two resorts located at the north of the Corfu Town. They have about 600 inhabitants and are the main marina of the island. It has large accommodations, tavernas, cafes, bars, and restaurants.
- The Archaeological Museum of Corfu. Located in the Vraila Street. it exhibits many archaeological pediments.
- The Byzantine Museum of Corfu. Located in the Church of Antivouniotissa. it houses a collection of Byzantine icons and relics.
- The Museum of Asian Art. Contains collection of mostly Japanese and other Asian arts.
- The History and Folklore Museum: Located in the village of Sinarades. it houses historical and folklorical objects.
- The Museum of Solomos. Houses the works and personal items of Dionysius Solomos, a reknown national poet.
- Municipal Gallery of Corfu: Exhibits galleries done by Corfiot artists.
