Travel the Greek Islands


Greece has many thousands of islands. People very commonly separate them as groups of islands, and most usually people would refer to the group of island to which an island belongs. Out of about 1400 islands in Greece, only 169 of them are inhabited. That is only 12% of the whole islands in Greece, a very small percentage. This article will discuss even smaller proportions, islands that are popular for international tourists.

The major island groups in Greece are:
  • The Cyclades Islands: It is located in the central and southern area of the beautiful Aegean sea. Many consider it to be the most beautiful group among the other groups. This group was created millions of years ago by earthquakes and geologic convulsions. Legend says the sea god Poseidon was largely responsible in creating the Cyclades. Due to its strategic geographical position, it served as an important bridge for exchange of civilizations among the Greek, Asian, and African cultures. Its members are Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Folegandros, Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Kythnos, Melos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Serifos, Sifnos, Syros, and Tinos.
  • The Dodecanese Islands: Unlike the other groups, it is closer to Asia Minor. It offers a lot of sunshine, and is frequently visited by tourists from all around the world, especially during the winter season. Like the Cyclades, it was also formed as a result of geological convulsions. This group possesses very rich history, and the inhabitants believe in many mythical traditions. Its members are Astypalaia, Chalki, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kasos, Kos, Lipsi, Leros, Kastelorizo, Nissyros, Patmos, Rhodes, Symi, and Telos.
  • The Ionian Islands: Its members are rich with green vegetations, beautiful beaches, crystal clear seas, blue mountains, and stunning white rocks. It is located near the Peloponnese, and just very close to Italy. Rich in history and traditions, the Ionian islands are commercial as well as marine centres. Its members are Corfu, Lefkada, Ithaca, Cephalonia, Zante, Paxoi, and Kethera.
