The Island of Mykonos

The Island of Mykonos

The Island of Mykonos is a tiny island located about 174 km from the Port of Piraeus. It is the smallest member of the Cyclades islands, yet the most famous, and by many is considered as a sacred island. From Piraeus, the trip to Mykonos takes about 6 hours. By plane, the trip takes approximately 35 minutes. Compared to the other paradise islands of Greece, Mykonos has fairly small amount vegetation. Nonetheless, its other strenghts makes it one of the most heavily visited islands in Greece. It is in fact also one of the most beautiful.

During peak days, tourists will find it easy to reach Mykonos from Athens, as there can be up to 10 flights per day. In addition to that, it is also easily reachable from Rhodes, Santorini, and Crete. For additional pleasure, it is also recommended to visit Mykonos’s neighbouring islands, its fellow Cycladic islands such as Andros, Ios, Naxos, Paros, and Tinos.

The island acquired its name from two sources. One is from the hero Mykonos, and one is from Mykonos in the story of Hercule and the giants. In the ancient Greece, there were only two cities in Mykonos, which were established by the Ionians from Athens who visited it in the 9th century B.C. After a while, it fell to the hand of the Delos, which remained as Mykonos’s major religious centre for many centuries.

In Mykonos, you will immediately find contrasting blue and white scenes, typical scene in pretty much almost all of Greek islands. In Delos, on the other hand, one will mostly find historical and ancient ruins. It is a small, sacred area, which is believed to be the birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis. In this area also lie ancient stadiums, a theatre, and ancient ruins of wrestling school. In year 88 B.C, Delos suffered from severe destruction from the wars between Mithridates against the Romans. This is why most of the historical sites found in Delos are mainly ruins.
