Crime in Greece

Crime in Greece

Starting from the 1990s, the crime rate in Greece has steadily increased. Obviously there has been a few incidents of armed robberies, car theft, and burglaries. This is due to the fact that since the 1990s, there has been an increase of illegal immigrations done by people of other countries, especially from the Balkans and Middle East areas, and it is they who mostly commit these types of crime. Nonetheless, the amount of conventional crimes in Greece has been one of the lowest in the world.

The serious problem in Greece, however, is the narcotics and drug trafficking. Greece is an important junction for illegal drugds that are marketed from Asia to Europe and The United States.

In Greece, possession of weapons is strictly prohibited, and unless one obtains a licence such as for hunting purposes, owning firearms is forbidden. Possessing, importing, and selling weapons carries severe penalty in Greece, including life imprisonment. In the past, people who committed gun crimes because of insult to their families were not punished. This old idea drew many critics from the Greek citizens, and the Greek government has since been less lenient to those who commit this type of crime.

As a member of the European Union, Greece has been playing an active role in combating the drug trafficking issues. In addition to that, Greece also participates in the Dublin group, which monitors international drug movements. In Greece itself, The Customs Police and the Hellenic Police are the prominent agencies which promote drug law enforcement. Since the harbours in Greece also serve as major point where illegal drug trafficking is conducted, the Greece government has also formed the Coast Police, which operates mainly in the harbours and seas of Greece.
