The Epidauros

The Epidauros

Unlike the ancient ruins in the Peloponnesos Peninsula, which is full of bloody history, the Epidauros Theatre, which is located 45 km east of Nafplion, is built upon an honourable effort to give therapeutic effect of the Greeks’ problems. This is the place where people worship the god Asklepios (the curer god). This place is far from war and competition. It is intended for one single purpose, to cure people’s sickness with art therapy. Even if the sick people cannot be cured, at least they are made happier and more hopeful.

Back then in the distant past, the locals were convinced that those who were sick would go to Epidauros. A lot of medical tools which were used during that time are now exhibited in the local archeological museums. The doctors were sure that dramas were important parts of the catharsis, which can help cure someone from a sickness. This very concept is highly similar with the concept of catharsis in the modern psychological and medical sciences. Another than the theatre, therein lie the ruins of ancient gymnasiums, which shows that in the old days, people knew that sport can also be used to cure people from sickness.

The Epidauros Theatre, which has a stadion shape, has a capacity of 14,000 persons. This theatre, which was built around year 400 B.C, has been left unchanged thus far. From the highest seats, we can see some mountains which surround this magnificent theatre. The Epidauros theatre is rather unique in that it is divided into two parts: a lower, more roomy section, and an upper section. The top section of the theatre is slightly steeper than the lower, something that contributes to the good acoustics of the theatre.

Somewhere nearby the Epidauros theatre, lie other important ancient sites. One of the most important is the Tholos, a circular structure. Its function is not clearly known, but many believe that this place is used as a therapy for those with mental disorders.
