Farming in Greece

Farming in Greece

Despite the fact that the Greeks have not done too much in improving their practical, hands-on experience, their analytic and curious nature give great influence in the future technology. An important contribution made by the Greeks is the botanical science. In two famous books, History of Plants and Causes of Plants, written by Theophrastus (student of Aristotle), gave a great influence to botanical science up until the 17th century. Theophrastus was considered the father of botanical science. His writings have broad scopes, such as morphology, classifications, fertilization by seeding and vegatative means, plant geography, forestry, holticulture, phramacology, pests, as well as the smell and taste of plants. In addition, Theophrastus also discussed about 500 wild plants and farming plants.

Theophrastus differentiated Angiospermae and Gymnospermae, Monochotyl and Dichotyl. He also write about the flower fertilization done by fruitless male flowers. This is the gender knowledge of plants, something which disappeared and was discovered again in the next 2000 years.

Greek scientists apparently could not defence themselves politcally. Competitions and wars between cities led the fall of Greece to the Macedonian troops. It has been traced that the fall of Greece was also due to the rise of population, and the deteriorating natural resources, either because of the wars, or natural causes. It seemed that the Greek farming was not enough to sustain their ever evolving culture.

The Greek culture also ended up being absorbed by other cultures, especially the Western. The Roman Empire, on the other hand, had the advantage of having rich and abundant natural resources. In opposite from the Greeks, the Romans were very interested in the practical aspects of farming. To the Romans, farming was a very important part of their economy, and it was the real deal. The main income of the Romans came from the land tax. Their most important constitutions dealt with agricultural plans, and most of their money was invested in farming lands.

The Romans came to a glory with their healthy and well-functioning agricultural technology. As they were conquering other nations, they built a culture which was Greek in origin, but Roman in actuation. User Comments and Reviews
