The Greek-Buddhist Art

The Greek-Buddhist Art

The Buddhist-Greek art is the manifestation of the Buddhist-Greek ideology, the blend of the classic Greek culture with the Buddha religion, which evolved for almost 1000 in Central Asia, between the conqueror of Alexander The Great in the 4th century B.C, and the conqueror of the Muslim people in the 7th century.

The Buddhist-Greek art has its own unique idealistic realism Hellenic art, as well as the first appearance of the Buddha in a form of a human, which helped form the art canon and especially Buddhist sculpting techniques in the entire Asian continent till nowadays. The Greek-Buddhist art is a unique example of the blend of the Western and Eastern cultures, which is not surpassed by any other forms of art.

The origin of the Buddhist-Greek art can be found in the Kingdom of bactria, Greece, which was founded between the year 250-130 B.C, and now is located in Afghanistan, from which the Greek Hellenic culture spread to the Indian continent together with the founding of the Greek-Indian Kingdom (180-10 B.C). Under the Greek-Indian group (Yawana), and then Kushan, the interaction between the Greek and Buddhist culture developed in the Gandhara area, which is now located in Northern Pakistan. It then spread to all over India, affecting the Mathura art, and then the Gupta Kingdom, which spreaded to Southeast Asia.

The influence of the Greek-Buddhist culture also spreaded to Central Asia, and it strongly created lowland art in the Tarim area, close to China. Eventually its influence reached Korea and Japan as well. User Comments and Reviews
