Education in GreeceEducation in GreeceSince the ancient times, Greece has been mostly dominant in the worlds of science, politics, and last but not least, education. Likewise, nowadays Greece puts a great importance in education. Every year the Greek government sets aside considerably large budget intended to improve the education system in the country. In Greece, many universities possess very high quality, and they are continuously trying to improve themsevles in an effort to match themselves with the great quality to that of other European countires, especially in the European Union. Greece is one of the youngest members of the European Union, and so far it has been doing quite well in attempting to create quality education for its citizens. In the Greece capital Athens itself, there are two universities which are considered to be ones of the best in Greece, the University of Athens, known as the UOA, and the National Technical University of Athens, known as the NTUA. The educational system in Greece dates back to the time shortly after Greece gained its independence from the Ottoman Empire. It actually developed as a combination of the French Elementary School Law of 1833, the Bavarian school system, as well as the pre world war German school system. The education system of Greece consists of three levels, the primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primary education system, similar to that of North American system, emphasizes kindergarten education. It also has the “compulsory primary school”, similar to the North American elementary school. The secondary level emphasized high school education, and it has two sub-levels, the junior high school and the senior high school. The tertiary level mainly deals with post-high school education, such as university and college/higher education institutes. In addition, postgraduate studies are also classified in the tertiary education level. This is intended for those who wish to pursue higher degrees such as Master or PhD, identical to that of the North American system. User Comments and Reviews Help our community!
