The History of The Greek LanguageThe History of The Greek LanguageSince the ancient time, the Greek language has remained as the dominant language in the Greek mainland, as well as its neighbouring islands. Currently, there are about 10 million speakers of Greek in Greece alone. In addition to being in used in Greece, the it is also used in countries such as Macedonia, Bulgaria, as well as Romania. Likewise, there are also many Greek communities outside Greece itself, such as Egypt, especially in the Cairo and Alexandria areas. Not only is Greek spoken by the Greek people themselves, it is also spoken by some Muslims. Turkey is the country wherein lies Greek speaking Muslims. These people are divided into two groups, the Crete group (originating from the Crete island), and the Pontus group, originating from the Black Sea area. The Crete group was exchanged with the orthodox group due to the Lausanne pact in the year 1923. They mostly live in the western part of Anatoly, in the coast areas of the Aegean, Mediterranean, and the Marmara seas. Nonetheless, over the course of many years, the Greek language has been overpowered by the Turkish language, and many of them ended up mastering only the Turkish language. The Pontus group mostly resides in the cities of Trabzon and Tonya, Northern Turkey. They also reside in two villages near Sakarya, which is Istanbul’s neighbour. The Pontus group has been Muslims since the 18th century, and they have adapted the mix of the Greek and Turkish cultures. In addition to using Greek as their daily language, they also use Turkish. The Attic Greek The Attic Greek is the variant of the Greek language, which was used mostly in Athens in the ancient time. Most of the literary works from this time was written in Attic Greek. As a matter of fact, Alexander The Great proposed the modern Greek by combining all the existing dialects. His intention of doing this was to make it easy for his soldiers to communicate with each other, as well as to teach this mixed language to those whose countries he invaded. The Attic Greek has been used in the Roman and Byzantium empires and has since become the modern Greek language. It is also known as the New Testament Greek.
