It was during this time that King George chose Ioannis Metaxas to administer a new government, in 1936. This attempt bore success in that it finally restores the public order. However, it was not without cost. Extended period of one party government, as well as repression of women rights came as the consequences of Ioannis Metaxas’s regime. During his regime, Metaxes was a feared figure. He was powerful that he emerged as a threatening political force. Previously, he had always been a minor character on the extreme right of the Greek political parties. It was during this time that he cultivated a closer relationhsip with the royal house. After gaining trust from the royal, he was the one chosen by King George to lead a new anticommunist regime. At the beginning, Metaxas was appointed as minister of war. In response to this, he pressured the parliament into a five-month adjournment, which led to his being appointed as Greece’s new prime minister. In 1936, there were massive strikes, conducted especially by human, especially women activists. He used his power to declare a state of emergency, in which he attempted to disintegrate the parliament. In addition to that, he was also fiercely opposing the human rights movement. All these turned him into Greece’s dictator. He modeled all his actions on Hitler and Mussolini’s fascist governments. He began forbidding strikes and declaring them as illegal, arresting political oponents, and censoring press. He also raised minimum wages and improved working conditions of the Greek citizens. As a result, there was a drastic decrease in unemployment rate. . User Comments and Reviews Help our community! Please leave a comment or review, |
