Famous Greek Gods:
The Greek culture is very rich with its gods and goddesses. This article discusses some of the most important Greek gods and goddesses, as well as their legendary roles.

  • Gaea: This goddess is well known as the mother and wife of Uranus. They are the Titans’, Cyclopes’, and the Giants’ parents.
  • Eros: Often mentioned in world’s literatures, he is the famous god of love. He is depicted as a handsome young man, characterized by “Pothos” (longing) and “Himeros” (desire). He is also well known as the son of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love.
  • Hades: He is the god of the underworld, and is well known for his greediness. He is pictured as a self-centered person who only cares about his own wellbeing. Due to his possession of metals mined from the earth, he is also called the god of wealth.
  • Poseidon: Also often featured in literary works, he is the god of the sea. He has a deadly trident as a weapon, which is known to cause the earth to shake. Amongst all the Greek gods, he is second only to Zeus.
  • Zeus: He is well known as the father of all Greek gods and mortals. He is the most powerful and is a leader of the gods of the Olympus. He has the famous thunderbolt as his weapon. His wife is Hera, but she is not the only woman in his life as he has had many affairs with other women.
  • Hera: Zeus’s wife. She is known to exhibit constant jealousy due to Zeus’s polygamic relationships with other women. She expresses her wrath by punishing her rivals as well as their children.
  • Athena: One of the most important goddesses in the greek mythology. She is the goddess of wisdom, war, arts, industry, justice, and skills. She is the daughter of Zeus, and the city of Athens was named after her.
  • Apollo: The god of prophecy who is well known for his medicinal and healing skills. He is also a gifted musician and talented sportsman as he was the first victor of the Olympic game.
  • Aphrodite: The famous goddess of love, who had many affairs other gods and the mortals. She is the mother of Eros, Anteros, Hymenaios and Aeneas. She is well known in the legend of the Trojan War.
