Athens vs. 2004 OlympicsAthens vs. 2004 OlympicsThe Greek people have one thing in common: they take pleasure in relaxing and having nice, leisure times. They start things off with lenience, but they get things finished on time. This is what you need to understand in order to comprehend what the Greeks did to achieve the success in the 2004 Olympics preparation. In the beginning of May, there were only 24 completed venues, out of the total 38. Nonetheless, the Greeks crammed everything till the last minute, and they did get things done, beautifully. If one takes a look at the wide and smooth Attiki Odos highway, he will know that Athens fulfilled its promised. At the centre of Athens, the facilities for the Olympics are more apparent. The main railway (the green line), which connects the Olympics Stadium Complex in Maroussi to the Peace Stadium and Friendship in the Pireas area can be called the Olympics Way. Athens also did a good job in attempting to provide security. At each station in the main railway, security guards were always standby. About 70,000 security personnels which were comprised of police, coast guard, troops and special forces were deployed by the Greek government to secure the 2004 Olympics. This is a 7:1 proportion of the security forces against the number of athletes which were competing in the Olympics. The Greek government set aside 1 billion Euros in budget for providing security, which is in record the most expensive security in the history of the Olympics. Not only did the Greek government provide its own security forces, but it also asked for the help of NATO. NATO deployed the multinational chemical biological radiological nuclear task force. Many Patriot rockets were also placed all around Athens, whereas, anti-aircraft rockets were placed in the city of Heraklion, just at the south of Crete, as well as in the Skyros islands. The Greek government also utilized the Zeppelin aircrafts, which were equipped with spy cameras, watching all over Athens. Aside from the security forces, the Greek government also did a good job in helping international visitors get help. They provided “May I Help You” kiosks, where foreigners could ask questions about just anything they needed to know, and some volunteers would be ready to answer in English. Overall, Greece did a good job in helping Athens face the 2004 Olympics. User Comments and Reviews Help our community! Please leave a comment or review, |
