Plato The Philosopher

Plato The Philosopher

Many consider Plato as one of the most important Greek philosophers of all time. His teacher, Socrates, is also famous. In addition to that, his brightest student, Aristotle, is also a well-known figure in the western philosopy.

As a young man, Plato studied under Socrates. As Socrates died, Plato kept learning on his own and honing his skills, much under the great influence of Socrates. It was at this time that he began founding his own school, The Academy, in 385 B.C. The Academy at that time was the most famous school in the western world, and it was the school where Plato’s brightest student, Aristotle, studied.

His well-known work is the dialogues between Socrates and others, which he entirely wrote. He utilized these dialogues as a lecture material for his students. Plato’s approach to the world around him is abstract. For instance, he would inquire worldly questions such as “what is friendship?”, “what is virtue?”, “can virtue be taught?”, “what is life?”, “why do we live?”

One of Plato’s most famous dialogues is called The Republic. Another one is called The Apology. The Republic is considered to be very influential in the western world philosophy. Its central theme is all about living a good life. It proposed important questions such as: “what is an ideal state?”, “how should justice be like?”, “what constitutes a good individual?” In it he also explained what the nature of justice is, as well as the nature of an ideal republic.

When one has delved himself into the world of philosophy, he must have heard of the utopian concept. This concept, in fact, was brought about by Plato. Utopia is a Greek word which means “no place”. This very specific kind of thinking basically speculates how an ideal republic should be. Plato also defined the famous four great virtues a republic may embody: courage, wisdom, temperance, and justice. User Comments and ReviewsPosted by Devanshu on Tue Jan 9 2007
